RED MARBLE FROM VERONA The rocks in the Verona area have their origins as sediments which accumulated in the sea bed which once covered the whole Italian peninsula. Because of the pressure, sediments which accumulated became more and more compact and the chemical actions of salt in the water caused their cementation. Red marble from Verona, also known as "Rosso Ammomico", owes its name to the presence of shells in the various layers which were extinct by the end of the Mesozoic era. This gives the red marble of Verona an average age of 160 million years and establishes it at the end of the Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era. Red marble from Verona is composed of lime- kilns and fine grains with a color variation from red to pink and sometimes yellow to white.

The territory north of Verona with the Lessini mountains, Valpolicella and lake Garda is one of the most important marble districts in Italy. Precious red marble from Verona is extracted from these hills. The marble is extracted in thick sheets and therefore well suited for architecture and design such as columns, arches, sculptures, vases, fireplaces, fountains and wells etc.
The excavation of the precious material spans over 2000 years of history. Since Roman times caves and laboratories have been active in the hills north of Verona (Valpolicella area) as is evident in the numerous monuments obtained from such marble in the nearby city of Verona. One example is the marble used in the construction of the Roman amphitheater known as the "Arena". Many famous architects have made use of Verona's red marble such as Andrea Palladio, Jacopo Sansovino and Vin- cenzo Scamozzi.

The Red marble or “Rosso Ammonitico” is an excellent material and possesses a strong tolerance to cold and can be sculpted and shined easily. The coloring o the red marble is due to the presence of small quantities of iron oxide, limonite and goethite.
